Splinter - EURISGIC
A. Viljanen (FMI)
Monday, Nov 28, 11:00-12:30

The EU/FP7 project "European Risk from Geomagnetically Induced Currents" (EURISGIC) will produce the first European-wide real-time prototype forecast service of GIC in power systems, based on in-situ solar wind observations and comprehensive simulations of the Earth's magnetosphere. By utilising geomagnetic recordings, we will also derive the first map of the statistical risk of large GIC throughout Europe. In the splinter session, we will give a brief overview of the results obtained since the beginning of the project in March 2011. The main tasks have been constructing an initial model of European high-voltage power grids, collecting models of the ground conductivity, improving codes for magnetospheric simulations and empirical forecasts, running a few GIC measurements, and compiling historic data sets.
