STCE

BIRA organizes 4 lectures on Radiative transfer given by Piet Stammes of KNMI (the Netherlands) in the frame of the STCE.
Dates: 25/9, 9/10, 13/11, 11/12 at 2:00pm (2 sessions of 45 min divided by a coffee pause).
Place: RMI conference room

Can you please send an e-mail to Sophie Raynal to confirm your attendance to each lecture.

The outline of the course "Atmospheric radiative transfer" is as follows:

1. Single scattering radiative transfer
- radiation quantities including polarisation
- scattering by spherical and non-spherical particles
- Mie, T-matrix, ray-tracing methods, experimental methods
- results

2. Multiple scattering radiative transfer
- radiative transfer equation, including polarisation
- several solution methods: Orders of Scattering, Adding-Doubling, Discete Ordinate, approximations
- results
- comparison with measurements

3. Applications of radiative transfer
- retrievals of trace gases from spectroscopic instruments, like DOAS
- retrievals of aerosols, clouds.

4. Applications of radiative transfer
- thermal infrared radiative transfer
- thermal emission of aerosols
- additional subjects
