ICAO, the International Civil Aviation Organization, is a specialized agency of the United Nations that coordinates the principles and techniques of international air navigation. Space weather disturbances can severely affect aviation operations. In particular, the positioning and navigation applications based on GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems such as GPC and Galileo) may be impacted, High Frequency communication (HFCom , 3-30 MHz) may deteriorate, or radiation exposure at certain flight altitudes may increase.
Four global centers (PECASUS, ACFJ, SWPC and CRC) supported by a regional center (SANSA) provide ICAO SWx services, switching responsibility roles every 2 weeks. They issue advisories ("warning messages") whenever specific thresholds for GNSS, HFCom or radiation are exceeded. The STCE is member of the PECASUS consortium that provides specific space weather (SWx) advisories for the benefit of civil aviation. The links to the workshops summarizing the various STCE contributions can be found underneath.
