KUL/CmPA Seminar: Why do we even care? Space weather effects 101

Seminar by Michaela Brchnelova (KU Leuven)

Title: Why do we even care? Space weather effects 101

Abstract:

Did you know that space weather can jam missile early warning systems? When considering a practical standpoint, solar physics is one of the most important branches of astrophysics since the Sun has a direct impact on our life on Earth. Indeed, we frequently cite the effects of the Sun and, by extension, of the space weather on our daily lives when discussing the motivation behind our research in solar physics. But what are these effects exactly? In this seminar, I will summarise the different impacts that the various types of space weather events can have on our technology and infrastructure. I will discuss aspects such as telecommunications, navigation, satellite operations, aviation, electronics and power systems, each time also linking these to real historical events. In the end, I will also present some of the biggest challenges related to operational space weather forecasting and monitoring when considering stakeholders in aviation, satellite operation and the military, and the ongoing efforts in this field.
