Title: The use of car observations to detect and forecast dangerous road conditions
Abstract:
Road weather models are a useful tool to forecast dangerous road conditions. However, they are typically constrained by the relative scarcity of the road weather stations with respect to the dense network of roads and highways. In this context, the advent of connected vehicles providing weather information presents new opportunities that are seized within the CELTIC-NEXT project “Secure and Accurate Road Weather Services” (SARWS), involving more that twenty partners from seven countries. We present the Belgian SARWS consortium and the data flows between the partners. The weather data received from 15 bpost cars are discussed and compared with several networks of weather stations. We present an experimental version of the RMI road weather model that provides road weather forecasts for each 50-meter road segment in the region of Antwerp, making use of weather information obtained from the car sensors.
