STCE seminar: Point spread function corrections in solar physics

We welcome Stefan Hofmeister from the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics in Potsdam, Germany. He is visiting the STCE/Cis Verbeeck to collaborate on EUI, the EUV imager onboard of Solar Orbiter studying the sun.

His seminar is about the importance of point spread function corrections in solar physics

Abstract: Point-spread functions of imaging systems describe the diffusion and scatter of light with the imager. Deconvolving an image with the point-spread function allows to correct for these imperfections; however, this correction is rarely applied in solar physics. I will show the effect of point-spread function corrections on AIA images, HMI magnetograms, and HMI dopplergrams, and shortly discuss its effect on active regions, coronal holes, the off-limb quiet Sun, and photospheric magnetic elements. Then, I will show how the point-spread function can be used yourself to correct the data and what side-effects of the correction have to be considered. I will discuss why instrument teams only provide the point-spread functions but not correct the data themselves by default, and will show how point-spread functions are actually derived. Finally, I will show first results regarding the point-spread function of Solar Orbiter/EUI.
